About

TECHNOLOGY

Aquafortus develops and holds multiple patents on non-thermal, continuous and regenerable ZLD technology. The Aquafortus ABXTM system is a novel liquid-to-liquid crystallizer that promotes the formation of salt crystals via a proprietary direct contact crystallization process using Aquafortus’ patented solutions. The ABXTM system efficiently reduces high TDS brines to salt and produces only clean water.

The Aquafortus ABXTM system works by a two-stage solvent exchange process with the patented “Absorbent” acting as a transfer medium for water. When wastewater brine contacts the Absorbent, salts from the wastewater brine instantly crystallize. The “Regenerant” then regenerates the Absorbent for continuous reuse in the system.

The Aquafortus ABXTM system will dramatically impact the economics of zero liquid discharge and promote its wider adoption. If you would like to know more about our technology, please get in touch.

About

APPLICATIONS

The Aquafortus ABXTM can be used in any industry where a high salinity brine is produced. We target applications where the total dissolved salt (TDS) content or the precipitation potential of the brine is beyond the capability of membrane-based technology, this typically is around 50,000 parts per million (ppm) and above. Aquafortus is currently focused on wastewater applications from oil and gas and mining.

Please feel free to contact us for any industrial applications you would like Aquafortus to provide an initial assessment on.

Oil and Gas

There are currently limited options in oil and gas to deal with the highly complex and saline produced water. Injection wells are still the most common disposal method in the United States, while in the Middle East, disposal into coastal waters is the dominating practice. These disposal methods not only have huge environmental implications but are also becoming less economical. The ABXTM can massively reduce the liquid volume for minimal liquid discharge (MLD) or zero liquid discharge (ZLD) applications.

Mining

Mining is a water-intensive industry and is often facing risk in securing and maintaining water supplies to continue operations. The Aquafortus ABXTM is not only able to treat decant liquors but also the tailings slurry for dry stacking. The ABXTM process is able to recover up to 98% of the water for reuse, therefore, increasing the water security of the mine. This reduces risk in tailings management and also competition with communities for scarce local water resources.

Resource Recovery

Brine is the most readily available source of minerals in the world. A significant volume of high-value salts, such as lithium, magnesium and copper, are thrown out with the wastewater produced by industrial processes. Aquafortus is not only able to clean the wastewater for re-use or discharge, but we are also able to recover the valuable salts.
